Cultivation of genetically engeneered sugar beet in the United States in 2011 (2010-11-04)

USDA recommends cultivation under certain conditions – after having thoroughly examined several alternatives

(Einbeck, Nov. 4, 2010, No. 33, ho) On November 2nd, the USDA advised the public under which conditions it will allow the continued cultivation of Roundup Ready® - in 2011. After having thoroughly examined several alternatives, the Department proposes the cultivation under certain conditions proposed and supervised by APHIS. This draft will be available for public comment for 30 days in the U.S.

Past Tuesday, the USDA resented a draft environmental assessment (EA) to allow the continued cultivation of Roundup Ready® - sugar beet in the U.S.A. After having checked several alternatives, the USDA prefers commercial cultivation subject to mandatory conditions, as minimum distances to be respected, and quality assurance measures for seed production. The compliance with these conditions will be supervised by APHIS, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

This draft EA will now be available for public comment for 30 days. All comments received on or before Dec. 06, will be thoroughly reviewed before the Department issues a final decision for 2011.

KWS appreciates the Department’s proposal, as it allows supplying the American farmers with state-of-the-art varieties with clearly demonstrated benefits for agriculture, consumers, and the environment as well in the year 2011.
